450 Saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji travelling to Italy by passenger ship

April 18th, 2011

AMRITSAR: It would be a unique journey of faith – 450 copies of the Guru Granth Sahib will reach Italy soon as “passengers”, each copy kept separately on seats to “maintain the sanctity of the granth.” While the copies reached Mumbai by bus on Saturday, they will begin their journey as “passengers” by ship on Monday to Italy. “The copies were sent in a special bus by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC). They will now be “seated” in passenger section of the vessel, accompanied by granthis,” SGPC Secretary Dalmegh Singh told TOI on Saturday.

In 2004, Sachha Sauda Gurmat Parchar Society, Canada, had airlifted a planeload of copies of Guru Granth Sahib from Amritsar for placing them in gurdwaras across Canada and North America. One copy each was placed on aircraft seats, which had a special canopy and mattresses.

Supreme Court, in a judgment, had accorded the Guru Granth Sahib the status of a “juristic person,” (the holy book becomes a person in the eyes of law) when it is installed at a gurdwara through a proper ceremony, said Singh.

SGPC is spending around Rs 20 lakh for the holy journey in order to make copies of the Guru Granth Sahib available to Sikhs in Italy. “In Italy, Sikhs accompanied by “panj pyaras” would receive the copies in consonance with “rehat maryada” (Sikh code of conduct),” Singh said.

SGPC has also decided to allow publication of the Guru Granth Sahib in US and Canada, given the demand among Sikhs devotees and problems arising during transportation of the holy scripture with “maryada.”
