Creating wealth from waste (The Tribune, Chandigarh)

October 18th, 2011

Chandigarh currently houses a major chunk of the NRI population, which lives all over the world. But how many of them are willing to take a step ahead and make a difference to their hometown? Harsimar Singh is one such young girl. Living in Canada, she brought the idea of making a difference among the youth and created an organistion by them.
Keeping her faith in the ideology to uplift underprivileged children, Harsimar’s Child and Youth Friendly Chandigarh on Tuesday organised an interactive session among 20 children of the SOS Village Rajpura with none other than Nek Chand. The young children were taught the basic concepts of recycling and making wealth out of waste. Sharing his experience about the same, Nek Chand says, “It is a learning experience for me when I teach young children how to recycle things. They tend to improvise and innovate.” Since utilisation of waste is one of the most significant ways to reduce pollution, Nek Chand feels that the example has been created and now depends upon the youth to continue the efforts towards it.

Sharing her thoughts on the NGO, Harsimar says, “NGOs are a very common concept. The idea is to make an impact.” Here’s hoping the grand old concept of recycling finds more takers.
